Movus: Revolutionizing Airport Logistics

Autonomous Airport Vehicle Streamlines Baggage Handling

Inspired by the complex and error-prone process of luggage and cargo transportation in airports, Ahmet Burak Veyisoglu and his team have developed Movus, an autonomous electric vehicle. The current system, largely reliant on human labor, often results in damaged or lost luggage due to human error and lack of efficient tracking systems. Movus aims to address these issues, offering a more organized and reliable solution.

What sets Movus apart is its unique properties. The vehicle is equipped with smart sensoring systems and artificial intelligence features, allowing it to autonomously facilitate cargo loading, unloading, transfer, and delivery functions without any human labor. This not only enhances safety and hygiene but also offers improved luggage protection measures.

The realization of Movus involves a metal chassis and thermoformed plastic parts for the vehicle body and interior trims. The conveyors within the vehicle are made of stainless steel and have modular units, allowing for a customized layout. The vehicle's dimensions are 1800 mm in width, 3200 mm in depth, and 2400 mm in height.

Movus' operation is facilitated by a Smart Routing System, which includes two Lidar Sensors on the top for depth and distance sensing, and two Stereo Cameras on the front for short-distance image processing and obstacle avoidance. The vehicle also features a 3-level compartment with an adjustable door structure on both sides, operated by linear actuators. The modular conveyor system inside is composed of triangular modules with 3 omni-wheels positioned 120 degrees from each other.

The development of Movus began in August 2021 and concluded in February 2022 in Turkey. The project faced several challenges, including the technological knowledge required for such a comprehensive project and the strict standards of airport apron areas. Despite these challenges, the team successfully developed a stylish and futuristic vehicle that not only meets the standards but also enhances the efficiency of airport logistics.

Movus' innovative design and functionality have not gone unnoticed. In 2022, it was awarded Silver in the A' Robotics, Automaton and Automation Design Award, a prestigious accolade that recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This award is a testament to the team's commitment to transforming airport logistics and setting new standards in the industry.
